What a wonderful weekend under blue skies. Kilcoy really turned it on. The town looked a picture and the showgrounds & camping area was a buzz with happy, friendly people. Wendy Wine-Taster, the Festival mascot, completed her Festival duties by welcoming patrons to the Festival & showing them the Festival Directory, which was needed with so much to see & do. After the early morning Fun Run , ably organised by Jayne Curtis & Wendy Smith, it was off to The Big Star Circus workshops. These were a hit, with the Bungee being a favourite. Thanks so much too the Regional Arts Development Fund for supporting these workshops (click to see outcome report) & also the Pastels Workshops with Tony Zammit for the Kilcoy Art Society.

The Morrow family of the Big Star Circus performed with professionalism and enthusiasm. As did Maurice Hardy country singer & song writer, who returned to entertain in the Big Marquee. The Kilcoy High School’s drama students brought their street theatre to the Festival & during Saturday dancers abounded, beginning with the Kilcoy Dance Academy & the Kilcoy State Primary School Dance Troupe giving talented & energetic performances out on the grassed area and drawing a appreciative crowd. The Mt Kilcoy Dance Group showed their style in the dining room, with visitors able to join in Old Time & New Vogue dances.

Mayor Graham Lehmann officially opened the Festival just after lunch, which was followed by the Just-4-Me Fashion Parade. The parade has become a Festival tradition and another tradition has developed where by models for the parade are gathered from among the campers. These ladies prove yearly that they are super duper models and have a lot of fun along with the local girls. This year a special parade of past Fantasy Fashions was also shown in support of the Kilcoy Hospital Auxillary. These recycled fashion awards will be back in 2011, so get your creative ideas together.

The SEQld Wine Tossing Championships & the SEQld Disc Bowls Competition, attracted many entrants, keen to win one of the beautiful trophies designed & lovingly made by local Peter Rice. The Kilcoy Residents Special Events Assn organised the all day BBQ once more & catered evening meals & breakfasts along with the Kilcoy Lions Club. A huge thank you to Noel Baker campoven cook extraordinaire & helpers, for his organisation & cooking of the campoven meals and feeding the hoards before the Campfire Concert on Saturday night. Kilcoy Unplugged launched their wonderful CD at the concert & gave great performances on a cold night.

Sunday started early with the Poets’ Breakfast in the Big Marquee providing early morning laughs. Two coachs arrived mid morning , one from the Gold Coast & the other from Brisbane to savour some country hospitality, along with the MG Car Club. Sixteen vehicles were given centre stage. The Qld Art Gallery made a return visit with curator of Modern Australian Art to 1975, Angela Goddard, presenting a talk on “Vida Lahey- Colour & Modernism”. An exhibition of Vida Lahey’s works will begin at the Gallery from the 16th October & is well worth seeing. A second cousin to Vida Lahey, Mrs Young from Burpengary travelled to Kilcoy especially to be at the talk. She commented that as a child she didn’t realise the significance of her cousin’s artwork, but could appreciate it now. The Woodford Scouts’ Monster Multi Draw Raffle provided 9 prizes for lucky winners & 2 Lucky Coupon draws saw 2 winners share over $900 worth of gift vouchers & prizes.

The Kilcoy Wood, Wine & Art Festival committee appreciates all the assistance, volunteer time, sponsorship & donations given to the Festival that helped it once more come to fruition, as always there are too many to thank in this small space. The Festival was a real WINNER. Thank you one & all. Next year the Festival will be celebrating 10 years since starting as a Wood Expo behind the Stanley Hotel, it’s come a long way and it will be time to really show-off. If you, your club, charity or business would like to be involved please contact Marg on 5498 1285 or Snow on 5497 1504. Thank you Kilcoy for your support.

Wendy Wine-Taster, mascot for the Kilcoy Wood, Wine & Art Festival spent an enjoyable month at Nirvana Estate Winery at Sandy Creek. She did live up to her usual occupation of “scarecrow” by frightening Julie Doolan, until Julie was used to having Wendy around. They then enjoyed warming cups of coffee on cold mornings and taste-tested Nirvana’s enjoyable fortified wines, a good drop for winter evenings. After a farewell toast last Friday, Wendy accompanied Marg Cortis & Lyn Harmer to Woongooroo Estate at Mt Archer, on Doyles Road, were she will stay for a while.

Wendy was welcomed by the Close family and enjoyed pumpkin soup and damper in the restaurant. Wendy has booked in for the Christmas in July celebration at Woongooroo and looks forward to greeting visitors there anytime through July.

Always one to support local events, Wendy Wine-Taster got along to the Kilcoy Hospital Fete on Saturday 29th May. It was a bleak morning in Kilcoy but all the preparations and setting up had been done and the Fete was ready to start with keen volunteers from the hospital & community ready to support the hospital in it’s fundraising quest.

Wendy found herself a cosy place on the verandah so she could watch the entertainment and meet and greet the locals and visitors in her capacity as mascot for this year’s Kilcoy Wood, Wine & Art Festival. Her message being “ A Date To Remember In September”. The date of course being the second weekend of September, Sat 11th & Sun 12th.

This year Pterodactyl Helicopters will be back and Captain Mike has kindly donated 2 joyflight tickets to be raffled. One ticket along with a weekend pass to the Festival will be raffled before the Festival, so look out for ticket sellers who will be out and about from the 24th June. The other ticket will be raffled on the weekend of the Festival. Proceeds from this raffle & other fundraising will be returned to the community via donations made by the WW&A committee after the Festival. As Wendy noticed at the hospital fete it takes people doing the hard work & making it fun to keep the local community alive & vibrant. If your club, charity or organisation is interested in receiving one of these donations please contact Marg on 5498 1285 or Snow 5497 1504 for details.

After bidding farewell to all the dedicated helpers, workers & volunteers at the hospital Wendy moved on to Nirvana Estate Winery on Sandy Creek Road to spend some time. Call out some time and say hello.
